A Historic Weekend for Motorsports

We've had a crazy weekend in motorsports. We've had NASCAR, IndyCar, and Formula 1. On Saturday we had a historic day. It was the first time that IndyCar and NASCAR have raced at the same track, on the same day, and in the same weekend. The weekend: July 4-5, 2020; The Day: July 4; The Track: Indianapolis Motor Speedway: IndyCar came first at 12 PM ET. The Race: GMR Grand Prix at Indianapolis. The Indy 500 will be held on August 23. Scott Dixon had won the Season Opener at Texas. He kept the lead of the season by winning the GMR Grand Prix. It was his 48th win in IndyCar. He is from New Zealand, and is a driver for Chip Ganassi Racing. He drives the #9 Honda. Day: July 4; The Race: Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard: It was the first Xfinity Series race done on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course. It was a hard fought battle with a lot of leaders. Cindric won the 1st stage. Briscoe took stage 2, and led throughout the final stage. He lost the lead with 4 to go, but he got it back and captured the win. It was historic because Briscoe is from Indiana. He had won at his home track. He needs 8 wins to get to the Cup Series, and the win at IMS (Indianapolis Motor Speedway) was his 5th. Day: July 5; Race: Australian Grand Prix; League: Formula 1: Lewis Hamilton was the F1 winner last season. He led late, but got a speeding penalty. His teammate Valtteri Bottas got the win. He drove the Mercedes #77 car in the F1 opener. F1 would normally start in the Spring. Leclerc finished second. He drives the #16 Ferrari. The race was at 9 AM ET. Day: July 5; Race: Big Machine Hand Sanitizer 400 at the Brickyard: Logano had the pole position. Kurt Busch was starting second. It was his 700th start. On lap 15, there was a crash on pit road. One of the men from the #12 team was hit during the crash. His name was Zach Price, a tire changer. He was drove at of the speedway. The crash was during the competition caution. The crash resulted in a red flag. Martin Truex Jr. had some problems with his car early in the race. It was some engine problems. The second year in a row that he has had problems early in the race at IMS. He ended up leaving the race on the 20th lap. Harvick and Logano battled on the restart. Justin Allgaier filled in for Jimmie Johnson who test positive for covid-19. Allgaier recked on Lap 22 after being part of the Pit Road crash during the competition caution. Cory LaJoie's Trump 2020 car was also recked during the pit road crash. He left the race. A black flag was put on Brendan Poole and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. due to not making the speed needed in the race. Harvick started to pull away. Martin Truex Jr's car's incident was a spark plug incident. Ryan Newman caused a caution on lap 41. Ty Dillon won the race off of pit road. He then dropped to 4th before the restart. William Byron led at the restart. Byron led by a lot on the restart. William Byron won stage 1.


Chase Elliot led on the restart after Stage 1. Ryan Newman left the track early in stage 1. Erik Jones hit the wall hard causing a fire under the hood, and caused a caution. William Byron won the race off pit road. One of Byron's tires blew after putting 2 tires on the last pit stop. This caused a caution. Byron's car was heavily damaged. He restarted at the back. Hamlin and Austin Dillion battled for the lead until Harvick came on the inside and passed both of them to take first. Blaney crashed hard into the wall. He glided to pit road. Harvick lead on the restart. He took off and led by a big margin. Bowman did a late pit stop, and after fighting went down a lap. Kevin Harvick won stage 2.

Harvick led on the restart. Hamlin and Harvick battled for the lead until Harvick took a lengthy lead. Blaney and Preece have left the race. Hamlin started to gain on Harvick. Hamlin pitted at lap 123. Harvick pitted at lap 124. Kenseth took the lead. Alex Bowman hit the wall hard, crashing, and causing a caution. Kenseth won the race off pit road. Hamlin lead on the restart after not pitting along with Bell and Harvick. Hamlin pulled away from Harvick and Kenseth. Harvick and Hamlin battled for first with 20 to go. Hamlin is pulling away again. Bowman and Buescher are out. It looks like Harvick, Hamlin, and Kenseth are the only ones who look like they can win with 10 to go. Hamlin crashed hard into the wall with a similar crash to Jones earlier in the race. The leader of the Cup Series and the race is out with 6 to go. Tough day for Joe Gibbs Racing. Tough day for Toyota. All the Toyotas have had a big vibration and have had problems. It was a make or break decision: pit or don't pit. Harvick will lead on the restart. We did have overtime. Overtime is 2 laps. Harvick restarted beautifully, pulling away. Kevin Harvick wins! He defeats Kenseth to capture his 4th win this season and his 53rd win all time. DiBenedetto and Austin Dillon crashed on the last lap. Harvick won the Brickyard 400 back to back years! He captured his 3rd Brickyard 400 win. Top 5: Position Driver number team car
