Cardinal Newman Girls' Volleyball are on a run after going 5-0 this weekend at the Nor-Cal Volleyball Invitational Tournament at American Canyon High School in American Canyon. The Cardinals started the week off with a big win over Justin-Siena 3-0 on Tuesday, and then traveled to Napa to face Vintage, who they beat 3-0. In the Tournament, games were 2 out of 3 sets and Newman was set to face San Domenico, who went 12-16 last year and finished 635th in California. Newman took care of business, knocking off the Panthers in straight sets. Next up for Newman was Lick-Wilmerding who came in to the game 2-0 and had an okay season last year, finishing 471st in California and 57th in the North Coast Section. Newman took care of business once again, knocking off the Tigers in straight sets. Newman made it to the Quarterfinals where they faced Atwater who are one of the best teams in the state and were 8-1 heading into the game. Newman did it again and advanced the semifinals, beating one of the best teams in the state in straight sets. Next was Ukiah who were 7-0 and put up a good fight, the best by any team in the tournament, sending the game into a third set, but the Cardinals pulled it off to advance to the final against hosts American Canyon.
The Cardinals dominated in the first set, winning 25-4 and did the same in the second set, but were even better, winning 25-2 and taking the Championship. Julia Waller, who was ranked the #5 setter in California by Prep Dig, was a standout for the Cardinals along with libero Caroline Dougherty, who performed very well at the tournament. Newman has a tough game at home vs. Terra Linda on Tuesday, and then they face Healdsburg in Healdsburg on Thursday. They start League play on September 19th at home against Analy. It's bound to be a good season for Newman, who in recent rankings cracked the top 100 in California and will be moving up because they took down Atwater. The team to beat, though, will be Windsor who are 5-0 so far with wins over Terra Linda and Vintage. Newman faces Windsor on October 3rd in Windsor and October 19th in Santa Rosa.
